Recently, I picked up a book that's been making the rounds in Chinese tech circles: AI Beats Humans by Wan Weigang. It's his second book on AI, following The Turning Point from 2024. The first read left me scratching my head—lots of tech jargon I couldn't fully grasp, especially as a product designer without a hardcore engineering background.

But after weeks of using AI tools for real tasks—generating copy, whipping up quick mockups, automating mundane reports—the concepts started to click. As the old saying goes: it's not the book that's the problem; it's your hands-on experience that hasn't caught up to the underlying logic.

Two big questions from the book stuck with me, and I think every product designer—hell, every professional—needs to sit with them: Will AI replace my job? And if so, how do I grow in a way that keeps me relevant?

The Trap of Chasing Every New Tool

In design, we've always been on a treadmill of new tools. From Photoshop to Sketch to Figma, and now a parade of AI generators. But here's the thing we've been ignoring: tools are getting easier to learn. What used to take a year or two to master now takes a month or two. With AI, it's down to days.

That means tool proficiency is no longer a moat. So what's left? Some designers are panicking and learning to code from scratch, hoping to jump into tech. But before you go down that path, ask yourself: is this really the answer?

I dabbled in front-end a decade ago, and that experience taught me enough to talk tech with engineers without getting steamrolled. But I'm not going to start writing React components now. AI has made technical execution cheaper, but it's raised the bar for cross-disciplinary knowledge. You need to understand the architecture, not just the buttons.

The "Scalable" Concept That Changes Everything

Then I hit this phrase in the book: "scalable." It hit me like a key turning in a lock. Scalable means the more you invest, the better the outcome—like training a large language model: more data, more parameters, more compute, better results. Non-scalable is the opposite: diminishing returns.

Think about it in economics: there's a point where adding more input yields less output. For humans, it's the same. If you've been designing interfaces for ten years, the eleventh year won't give you the same leap as year one. Highly specialized skills can be a trap if they don't have headroom to grow.

So the idea is to find something scalable to invest in. For me, that's not pixel-pushing or mastering another tool. It's building a deep understanding of systems, psychology, and business—the stuff that lets me define problems, not just execute solutions.

AI Hits Different Skill Levels Unequally

I was chatting with some younger colleagues about using AI to create content. They were all for it, while I admitted I still prefer writing by hand. One of them joked, "Masters hand-forge their own tools." I laughed, because I knew we were coming from different places. But it made me think about the book's diagram on how AI affects low, mid, and high-level skills.

In the book, skills are scored 0-2 (low), 2-4 (mid), and 6+ (high). The takeaway: for entry-level workers, AI is a huge boon—it makes you look more professional. For mid-level folks, it reduces repetitive work and lets you focus on decision-making. For top experts, AI isn't something to merely use; it's something to command.

So the impact is asymmetric. You either get replaced by AI, or you become an amplifier of your own abilities. It all depends on how high your skill ceiling is and how well you can direct the machine.

What AI Lacks: The 'Manas' Factor

The book opens with a Buddhist concept: manas, or self-awareness. It's what gives us a sense of identity and continuity. AI has a kind of history—the data it's trained on—but once it's deployed, that history is frozen. It doesn't update itself. It can't say, "I remember that time you messed up and learned from it." It's always a blank slate until you prompt it.

Why does this matter for job seekers? Because it means someone has to take responsibility for decisions. AI can't bear the consequences. That's still on us. So if you're worried about being replaced, remember: the final call is human.

My own background in economics, project management, psychology, and even history suddenly feels like a secret weapon. All that knowledge is my training data. I don't know exactly where it'll lead, but it gives me an edge that pure tool-chasing never could.

What This Means for Your Job Hunt

So, will designers be replaced? My answer is no. What gets replaced are roles stuck in non-scalable, repetitive tasks. The survivors are those who:

  • Invest in scalable meta-skills: systems thinking, cross-domain understanding, creative problem-solving.
  • Use AI to amplify their existing strengths, pushing toward higher-level decisions.
  • Nurture the uniquely human stuff: insight, empathy, aesthetic judgment.

AI is not your enemy. It's a mirror showing you what your work is truly worth, and a ladder to climb higher. The antidote to job-search anxiety isn't fear of technology—it's a deeper understanding of yourself and a willingness to invest in the skills that actually compound.

So next time you're updating your resume or prepping for an interview, don't lead with the tools you know. Lead with the problems you can solve, the decisions you can own, and the things you can create that no algorithm can.
